Meet our March Blogger of the Month: Carmen Chopp

Carmen Chopp

Hello. My name is Carmen Chopp, and I am delighted to be the March BOTM. No, really. So excited. Ecstatic. Pumped up.

I started my personal blog, 4 Out The Door, in January of 2010 during a period of personal and professional transition. My husband and I decided it was time for me to give up my job as a retail manager, in favor of one that offered fewer hours and schedule flexibility. We have four children, three of which, at the time, were still in diapers. The decision was agonizing, as many of you who’ve been in that position can certainly relate. I wish I could say that I handled it with untold grace, but I kind of lost my shit, and I’ve been floundering ever since.

My professional history, much like the blog, reads like someone with a personality disorder — non-profit coordinator, insurance adjuster, lawyer, retail manager, real estate salesperson, event coordinator, with several other random jobs squeezed in there. And now, writer? Yes, a writer.

The mention of mental disorders is not to make light of mental illness. I am passionate about mental health and very open about my personal struggles with anxiety and depression. This past year, in particular, has been incredibly difficult for me and represents a real low point in my life. I have to give credit to my incredibly supportive husband, and my girls — our four beautiful, effervescent daughters — for keeping me afloat. They are, without a doubt, the reason I get up every day.

Ten random facts about me are:

  1. I am a voyeur. I love to be still and watch.
  2. I love bathroom and bodily function humor.
  3. I have always wanted to be a hip hop dancer.
  4. If I could afford it, I would go to school for the rest of my life.
  5. At some point, I want to live in New York or abroad.
  6. I don’t ever want to be known as someone who was risk averse.
  7. I am crazy good at coming up with nicknames for people.
  8. I hate the sound of my kids arguing and can’t get enough of them laughing.
  9. I am sarcastic.
  10. I am an expert traveler.

Now that I have gotten all of that out, I hope you feel prepared to read what I’ve got for you this month related to the theme Have Suitcase, Will Travel. And if you find yourself wanting more Carmen, I am all over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.  I look forward to connecting with more bloggers, and thank you so very much for reading my words.

Welcome to our little club, Carmen! With this neverending Kansas winter, nothing sounds better than planning a trip somewhere else, preferably warm. Can’t wait to hear about your travel tips and experiences!

It’s so fun when two of your worlds collide. I’ve enjoyed reading several of Carmen’s blogs since we reconnected last year thanks for Facebook (junior high school buddies). And now here she is hanging out with a number of my professional communicator buddies from Wichita! Great to see you again.

Had no idea, Angela! What a coincidence. Didn’t realize how many Wichita folk there were in this community until I started visiting the blogs listed by region. Pretty cool. Thanks for reading my posts!
