Meet our July Blogger of the Month: MeLinda Schnyder

MeLinda SchnyderThis month we welcome MeLinda Schnyder of NextDoorToNormal as the KSWB Blogger of the Month. MeLinda is a new blogger posting about life, travel & her pursuit of happiness as a married and childfree-by-choice Mizzou grad living in Kansas. She’s a freelance journalist and content creator based in Wichita. Here’s a little more about MeLinda.

Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been making random posts about my life and my travels with equal scoops of sarcasm and silliness at Also in January, I launched an online writing and photography portfolio that I update blog-style at

When I tell people I’m a writer, they immediately think books. So I occasionally tell people I am working on my first novel, a *dirty* version of Fifty Shades of Grey. Then I pause to let that sink in.

It’s more accurate to say I’m a freelance journalist and content creator. I write a lot about how businesses and individuals use their airplanes, and I want to write a lot more about travel.

I started blogging in January 2013 after annoying my friends and coworkers by talking about doing it for way too long. Why did I drag my feet? Well, I write for a living so I dunno, maybe I didn’t want to commit to writing regularly in my spare time or maybe {I think this is the real reason} I was afraid of my voice.

As I wrote here on the About page at, I’ve made a career out of writing objectively (journalist) or writing in other people’s voices (speechwriter and public relations professional). I wasn’t used to sharing what I personally had to say with the world. And, as the blog title clearly states – what I have to say is often next door to normal.

Not a single person who knows me asked why I named my blog Next Door to Normal. Not one. So I’m taking that as a sign that I got the name right!

Since y’all don’t know me yet, I’ll explain a little: many of my thoughts are not conventional {or people just usually keep those thoughts to themselves} and some of my life decisions aren’t considered normal. What do I mean by that? Well, let’s see:

  • I’m a Mizzou journalism grad who willingly moved to Kansas.
  • I am childfree by choice.
  • I quit my job when I was 30 without having another one lined up. And, I did it again after turning 40.
  • I’m sorta on a career break – happy one year anniversary to me!

For me, the hardest part of blogging was getting started – so I finally just started where I was. I’m having a blast blogging because it’s so different than the other kind of writing I do … you know, the kind that pays.

Thanks to KSWB for this chance to share my blog. I’m looking forward to connecting with the Kansas blogging community.
