HOT, HOT, HOT Summer Activities

Shelbi GustafsonBy Shelbi Gustafson, Blogger of the Month for July

That July summer heat is definitely upon us, but don’t worry — there’s still time to enjoy the summer before it’s over! Today I’m going to tell you about two of my favorite summer activities that are in the Wichita (and surrounding) area.

If you’ve visited my blog at all you might have seen a few (or maybe a few too many) shots of my wedding last October. My husband and I were married at Grace Hill Winery, which is in Whitewater, about 15-20 minutes north of East Wichita.

I may be a little biased because this winery holds a special place in my heart but I think it is absolutely beautiful. Not only is it beautiful but it’s a fun place to visit and try out some new, locally made wine. They have free tours and wine tastings on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. or by appointment Monday-Thursday. They also have an awesome event room and patio which you can rent out for any type of event! If you haven’t already you should definitely check out Grace Hill Winery this summer!

Another exciting activity that you might not have experienced before is Chautauqua Hills Farm. The family of one of my really good friends owns this blueberry farm located 1 1/2 hours southeast of Wichita in the beautiful hill country of Chautauqua County.

This is my adorable friend Nan picking some huge, nickel-sized blueberries at her family’s beautiful farm! They also have asparagus and blackberries for sale. When you go out to pick berries, you absolutely have to stop at Toot’s for lunch for some of the best food you’ve eaten! If you can’t make it out to their farm during picking season, they also sell their berries at the Green Acres Farmer’s Market, the Kansas Grown Farmer’s Market, and the Old Town Farmer’s Market.

I’ll leave you with one last picture of my sister and me at Chautauqua Hills Farm last summer!

I have always wanted to visit both of those places! Thanks for sharing the pictures here. I’m assuming blueberry season is already over, but maybe we’ll make it out to Chataqua Hill Farm next year. 🙂 I get the Grace Hill email newsletter, and they sometimes have guests come out to help them harvest the grapes. Not sure if that’s already over with for the year.

Your wedding looked like a lot of fun. Beautiful location! Blueberry picking sounds like fun. Thanks for the farmer market recommendations. I’m new to the area and I’ve been dying to get my hands on some organic local produce.
